Don't forget that a Tech that becomes Tech+ has the /KT suffix
they can (should) use when in the HF.

As to the 6 moving to 8 with /AG, I would think one could sign
/AG8, and leave out the second slash (/8/AG or /AG/8).
After all, AG8 is a valid callsign prefix.  (I recently read
Part 97, and it is not clear about the two combined; nothing is
mentioned really).

Therein lies the tale.

When I was first licensed 43 years ago, Part 97 (which was Part
12 then) contained elaborate rules about portable/mobile
operation, including how to ID.

Included were rules requiring notification of the
Engineer-in-Charge at the affected district offices BY MAIL
prior to and monthly during any period of portable/mobile
operation which was more than 24 hours long without returning to
the address on your license!

If your portable operation was at the same fixed location for
more than three months, you were required to apply for either a
change of address or A SECOND STATION LICENSE. The latter option
was available to people who had stations in two places such as
home and the office, vacation cabin, college dorm, etc. You had
to prove you had a full complement of radios at both. When I was
at UIUC in the late 50s, my second call was K9HBV.

Somewhere along the line the FCC grew weary of all that paper
work, and these requirements were dropped one by one until today
there is nothing in Part 97 at all about notification, ID, or
the like. As long as they can send you mail at the address on
the license, they don't care where you operate from or how you
ID as long as your callsign is in there somewhere. The upgrade
ID requirement is the only remaining vestige of the former
practice.

This I believe.  People head for their local electronics shop and pick

it's "red dot"!  Right?  "Bruno, you want Hot and Sour, or Egg Drop?"

Extended receive is so much fun.

I once rented a pair of UHF HTs, and asked the fellow if any ID was
necessary.  No, he said, which I thought was odd.  Yes, said Part 90,
when I looked in it later, but how do you cram a callsign out of a
mistaken licensee?  I think a lot of people on those bands have no
idea of what the rules really are.

I doubt if those who do the FCC license paper work (all two of them :-)
also maintain the computer systems.  Anyway, all government computer and
network techs are busy trying to keep the IRS computers online! ;-))

BTW, what kind of computer are thay running over in Gettysburg?  A
PDP 1123 with the washing-machine sized drives??   On the otherhand,
even RSX11 is better than DOS!!

didja miss the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and follow ons?  part of
that is why you aren't going to be able to buy scanners with 800 MHz ranges in
them real soon now.

Gosh, a call like AA1FU would probably make the SBS crowd a good
club call.

Last time I heard (quite a while ago) it was a SPERRY 1100 runing EXEC-8.
A PDP-11/23 running RSX11 (or RT11 for that matter) would run circles around
it.  And if you think "washing-machine sized drives" sounds funny, the last
1100 I worked on (also owned by the governemnt) had a drum as well.

We have one here that is reported to use gears and
pushrods, and uses a white rat running in a wheel
to power it.

Well, the rule specifies that KT is to be used when a Novice upgrades
to Technician.

Except for the catchall that anything suffix is legal as long as it
doesn't conflict with ITU or FCC prefixes.  I think you're right about
/AG8 being OK.
